Important February Dates

The month of February is full of important dates! Mark your calendars!

Month of February- Black History Month

Feb 1- National Freedom Day
A day in celebration of the signing of the 13th Amendment of the Constitution by Abraham Lincoln.

Feb 2- Groundhog Day
An old folklore legend says that if the weather is cloudy and the groundhog leaves his burrow winter will end soon. If it is sunny and the groundhog sees his shadow and retreats back to his burrow, winter will continue for six more weeks.

Feb 7- Greet Your Neighbor Day
The name speaks for itself…

Feb 12- Abraham Lincoln’s Birthday
Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States. He was born on February 12 1809. He successfully led the Union through the American Civil War, ending slavery.

Feb 14- Valentines Day
Formally named “Saint Valenteine’s Day”. This is a day to celebrate love and affection between two people. Saint Valentine was a Christian martyr given a calendar date of celebration.

Feb 15- Susan B. Anthony Day
A day of celebration for the birth of Susan B. Anthony. She was an advocate of women’s suffrage. The date began celebration in 1920 after the 19th Amendment was passed giving women the right to vote. (Thanks girl! ;] )

Feb 20- Love Your Pet Day
As if you don’t already love your pet every day, there is a designated day! Cuddle your furry, feathered or bald pet friend! Celebrate your love for them!

Feb 22- George Washington’s Birthday
The first President of the United States. He was born on February 22, 1732. He was the leader of the United States in the Revolutionary War as the commander of the Continental Army. Props, George!

*President’s Day (3rd Monday in February)
Also known as George Washington’s birthday. The holiday was created in 1880. This was the first holiday created to honor an American citizen.
