The Story of Spider-Man: Homecoming

Spider-Man

I absolutely love movies with behind the scenes special features. One of my favorite things is watching what goes into making a full length film. When I learned Spider-Man was not going to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it set off my spidey senses. What behind the scenes tomfoolery could cause the absence of such a beloved character?

The answer is a story as convoluted and odd as you’d probably guess. It finally culminates with the return of Spider-Man to the MCU this summer in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Marvel, Bankruptcy, and Spider-Man

Way back in the 90’s, there was a massive comic book boom due to inflating comic book values. People began to realize the rarity of old comics from the 40s and 50s, especially first editions. DC and Marvel both capitalized on this, printing millions of new comics and making collector’s editions as much as possible. Characters married each other left and right, superman died, it was a crazy time. It didn’t take long for people to realize the market was saturated.

The comic book boom ended shortly after and Marvel quickly encountered trouble. They were up to their eyeballs in debt from overprinting and underselling comics. The crash eventually caused Marvel to declare bankruptcy. As a result, the company desperately sold off movie rights to a number of characters. The rights to both Spider-Man and the X-Men properties passed though a number of companies, finally settling in the hands of Sony.

Sony’s Tragic Mismanagement

Sony handed the property rights to Sam Raimi after a number of failed attempts to bring Spider-Man to the big screen. Sam Raimi reimagined the web slinger in “Spider-Man”, directing both sequels in the series. The first two movies were massive hits! The third was a flop, both critically and commercially. Regardless, Sony allowed Raimi to move forward with a fourth movie slated for a 2011 release date. Unfortunately, Sony canceled the project due to creative differences.

Spider-Man underwent a reboot from Sony with the movie “The Amazing Spider-Man”. It became a cinematic hit and the studio decided to produce a sequel. However, this was the 5th Spider-Man movie in 10 years. Audiences became tired of the superhero, and having two reboots in 5 years is a tad confusing for the general public. The series ultimately ended before producing “The Amazing Spider-Man 3”.

The Return to Marvel

Possibly the only good thing to come out of the 2014 Sony email leaks was news about Spider-Man was returning to Marvel. Disney and Sony reached an agreement to allow the wall crawler to return to the big screen under the Marvel umbrella. However, the odds are stacked against Spider-Man Homecoming. As the third reboot in 15 years, audiences could have Spider-Man fatigue. For fans of the superhero, here’s to hoping that Spider-Man: Homecoming rises above the tangled web of past disputes and turns out to be a great film!

Halloween Breakdown of Scary Movies

Yay! October! It’s getting colder and it is officially the Halloween month. This means costumes, candy and of course- scary movies! Who doesn’t love grabbing a big bowl of candy and watching scary movies until you have to sleep with the lights on? But the struggle is, which scary movie do you want to watch? This is my list of scary movies to watch this October. I broke them down into the following categories: Sort of Watching, Sort of Not, Watching Without Losing Sleep and Never Sleeping Again.

Sort of Watching, Sort of Not

These are the movie suggestions for when you want to watch a scary movie, or have one on, while you’re doing something else. So these are scary movies that you don’t have to be 100% invested in to enjoy.

Scream

The Scream movies are gold. And I am in no way trying to diss them, but they don’t require a lot of concentration. Basic slasher film. Except they’re making fun of slasher films without being boisterous like the “Scary Movie” movies. These movies are nice to watch when you know your attention can’t be entirely focused on the movie. The first movie was the best, but I also recommend the fourth if you want to laugh during the movie.

Paranormal Activity

These movies, like the aforementioned, are ones you don’t have to completely watch to understand. This series of movies are ghost movies based more on jump scares, which is great, especially for dates when you want to talk a little but also watch a scary movie. I recommend the first and second Paranormal Activity.

Watching Without Losing Sleep

These are the movies that will scare you while you’re watching, but not enough to freak you out after its over. You will still be able to rest easy with the lights off at night.

Halloween

It had to be on this list somewhere. One of the most famous horror films of all time. Michael Meyers is on a mission to kill his whole family (this mission changes as you get further into the series and the writers run out of ideas). The first movie is the one I recommend, although Halloween: H2O holds a special place in my heart.

The Shining

One of my favorite Stephen King movies, even though he hates it. An alcoholic father takes his wife and son to a hotel to take care of in the winter. Cabin fever, anyone? A great movie that keeps you interested and freaked out but not enough to make you sleep with the lights on.

Never Sleeping Again

These are movies that terrified me and made me sleep with the lights on and the door open. *Disclosure* these are movies that scared me personally, but everyone’s fears are different.

The Woman In Black

Only the first one. I watched it because Dan Radcliffe was in it, and ended up losing a lot of sleep. There’s not really jump scares, the movie scares you more from your anticipation of what happens next. Dan Rad goes to an old house to take care of a clients paper work after he’s passed away, only to encounter something really freaky.

Insidious

I don’t know what happened to these people when they were younger, but their minds come up with the scariest stuff. The makers also did Sinister, which was an equally terrifying movie. A young son falls into a coma, and while under horrifying spirits try to take his soul. Seriously, horrifying. Watch it.

I hope this post gave you some ideas of what movies to watch as we enter Halloween season. Enjoy, and always remember the movies aren’t real! Or are they?…

Four 2015 Book Movie Adaptations

The past couple of years we’ve watched as tons of books were adapted for the big screen. With the Harry Potter movies finished (sad face) we get excited for other books we’ve read to become movies. These are some book movie adaptations that are coming out this year!

The Scorch Trials

This is the second movie in the Maze Runner Trilogy. The trilogy is a post-apocalyptic novel with the characters trapped in different situations without their memories. The first installment ended when they escaped the Maze. The Scorch Trials follows what happens after, and explains more about why they were in the maze, all while trying to find a cure for the Flare virus. Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, and Thomas Brodie-Sangster.

Mockingjay Part 2

The final installment of the Hunger Games is upon us. The first part ended with Peeta brainwashed and Katniss declaring war on the Capitol. Another post-apocalyptic trilogy with a corrupt government and the awesome main character, Jennifer Lawrence. In the last installment we should see the war on the Capitol continue and see how Katniss ends up. Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, and Donald Sutherland.

Frankenstein

Yes. Another adaption of Mary Shelley’s famous work. But this one has Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy in it! The 1994 adaption is my personal favorite. The story follows Dr. Frankenstein’s assistant, Igor, rather than the monster. It’s supposed to be a more contemporary adaption and it will be interesting to see how it turns out!

The Jungle Book

Disney has been on a kick lately of remaking animated movies as live action. This one includes a cast of Scarlett Johansson, Lupita Nyong’o, Bill Murray and Christopher Walken. An orphan boy is raised by animals and has great animal friends. The past few live action remakes have gotten great reviews, hopefully this one will too!

These are a couple of movies adapted from books to be excited about this year. eCampus.com has all of these books in stock, so if you don’t have them, make sure you read them!

As always, have a good day and comment below which of these book adaptations you’re excited for and how you think they’ll turn out!

80’s Movies That Should Not Be Remade

Lots of movies are being remade, or rethought; whether the remakes are pale in comparison or surpass the special effects, there are some classic movies that should never be remade in my opinion. This is a list of 80’s movies that should not remade. If you have not seen any of these movies you should definitely add them to your rainy day movie list!

The Breakfast Club

80's movies
This is one of those movies that you watch, and you’re like wow, that was pretty cool. It’s not about saving the world, and there isn’t explosions but a group of teens locked in a library for a Saturday is still pretty cool. The movie has teens interacting from different social groups, and having fun. A great movie to watch if you’re with friends or having a movie date.

Back To The Future

MV5BMjA5NTYzMDMyM15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNjU3NDU2MTE@._V1_SX640_SY720_
All three of these movies are brilliant. A crazy scientist, a teen, and time travel. What else could you ask for? They find time travel, and Marty travels back in time to save Doc, and along the way he meets his teenage parents and tries to help them out too. A great movie if you want to laugh.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

80's movies
If you haven’t seen this movie, you’re seriously missing out. Ferris skips school and paints the town red. He takes his girlfriend and his best friend with him, all while trying to escape the principle and Ferris’ sister. Seriously, watch this movie, it will cheer you up even if you’re crying and haven’t left the house in three days.

Drop a comment below and tell me your opinions on these picks and which 80’s movies you think are so awesome they should not be remade.
