How to Prepare for Graduation

graduation header 1

With the end of the semester approaching faster and faster, seniors are finishing up the final steps for graduation.  Whether you’re a senior about to graduate, a junior trying to get ready for your final year, or a sophomore looking to plan ahead, here are some important steps to remember and tricks for getting them done!

1. Print out a checklist for all of your graduation requirements.

graduation checklist

Check off all the courses you’ve already taken or are currently in, and figure out what you have left.  Then add up all the credits and make sure you know how many credits you need to reach your graduation minimum.  For most undergraduate programs it is around 120 credits, but make sure to double-check and plan accordingly so you graduate on time!

2. Figure out your cumulative GPA at this point in your college career.

graduation gpa

Figure out what you need to do to reach the GPA you want by the end of your final semester.  This can just be a personal goal for you or if you’re planning on going to Grad School it’s important to know what the programs you’re planning on applying to require. It’s easy with a GPA calculator.

3. Take advantage of your adviser’s help.

graduation advising

Academic advisers are there to help you stay on track to graduate and can be great resources if you have questions about Grad School and career tracks.

4. Register for graduation on time!

Make sure you pay attention to the deadline and whatever you need to bring with you or complete online.  If not, you’re probably going to be charged a late fee!

 5. Go to your campus’s career services office.

An important step of graduation preparation is post-graduation planning.  You want to be prepared for what comes after you get your diploma.  Don’t put it off until you’re out of school; ideally, you’ll have a job or graduate program lined up so you’re not stuck worrying about not knowing what you’re going to do.

6. Mark your calendar!

graduation calendar

Figure out the dates of your departmental graduation ceremony and the larger convocation ceremony as soon as possible (these dates are usually made available during the Spring semester of the previous year in the Academic Calendar).  Then let your family/friends/whoever you want to attend know so they can plan for it.  If they need to travel, book a hotel, or take off from work, it will be much easier if they have advanced notice.

 7. Order your cap and gown!

Your school will likely send a graduation packet home in the mail so make sure you meet all the ordering and RSVP deadlines.

8. Make sure you don’t slack during your last semester.

Make sure you keep your grades where they need to be and prepare for finals.  You don’t want any last minute surprises and you certainly don’t want to fail a class and have to come back for another semester.

 9. Relax!

graduation relaxing

Once you’ve done everything you need to do, relax and enjoy your last moments as an undergrad!  Graduation can be a very emotional and stressful time for a lot of college students, so stay on top of it and relax once you’re in the home stretch. Spend time with your friends and appreciate your relatively limited responsibilities because adulthood is just around the corner!

Affordable Hair Care Products You Need In Your Life!

Hair care products don’t have to break the bank to make your hair look and feel great.  There are so many options for shampoo, conditioner, hair serums, hair masks, and anything else you can think of.  You may find it hard to pick products out of the sea of choices in front of you.  Here are a few great affordable hair care products you may want to try!

Dove Hair Therapy Dry Shampoo

2-18 Dry Shampoo

This is a great, basic dry shampoo that smells fresh and leaves no white residue unlike a lot of other dry shampoos.  It refreshes two and three-day-old hair and brings it back to life.  Over-washing your hair strips away some of the good oils that keep your hair healthy, so dry shampoo is a great way to keep your hair feeling freshly washed without having to actually wash it everyday.

It retails for $3.94 at Walmart

Head & Shoulders Full & Strong Advanced Thickening Treatment

2-18 Thickening Treatment

For those of you with dry scalp that are looking for a way to thicken your hair, give this a try.  Not only does it work to thicken your hair at the root, it also helps with itchy and/or dry scalp.  It’s a two in one!

It retails for $9.93 at Walmart

Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe Texturizing Sea Salt Spray

2-18 Sea Salt Spray

This product is great for adding a bit of volume and texture to your hair without weighing it down.  You can spray it on wet or dry hair for subtle beachy waves.  It also smells like the ocean air, which is amazing!

It retails for $5.99 at Ulta

L’Oreal EverPure Sulfate-Free Color Care System Volume Conditioner

2-18 Conditioner

This conditioner is amazing for color-treated hair.  It keeps your hair healthy, which is essential if you dye your hair because of how much damage that does.  It also helps add a bit of volume and smells like rosemary and mint.  This conditioner is also 100% vegan!

It retails for $6.99 at Ulta

Garnier Fructis Style Sleek & Shine Anti-Humidity Hairspray

2-18 Hairspray

This hairspray is great in any weather and smells amazing.  It doesn’t have the standard hair spray scent, but actually has a bit of a citrus kick to it.  It also makes your look beautifully shiny and feel extra-soft.  And it has an impressively strong hold!

It retails for $2.96 at Walmart

How to Avoid the Flu This Winter

Now that we’re in the thick of winter and storms are taking over the North East Coast, you may be feeling the wrath of Flu and Cold Season.  If not, you may be worried about what may be coming for you.  For those of you who are hoping to continue avoiding those pesky winter illnesses, here are some important steps you can take to strengthen your best defense: your immune system!

1. Bundle up whenever you go outside.

1-28 Winter Pug

Dressing properly for the cold weather is one of the best things you can do for your immune system.  While it may not completely prevent a cold or the flu, it will make it worse if you are starting to feel any symptoms, so it’s really important for you to dress for the cold.  Always wear your coat buttoned or zipped up and don’t forget to break out the hat, scarf, and gloves.

2.  Drink a lot of tea.

1-28 Tea

All hot beverages warm you up on cold days, but tea has a lot great health benefits.  Black tea is great for your immune system and green tea has loads of antioxidants, so stock up tea and drink a cup or two a day!

3. Practice healthy eating habits.

1-28 Healthy Food

Eating right always makes you feel right and that is especially true when loads of people around you are getting sick.  The healthier you eat, the better your overall health will be when you’re surrounded by cold and flu germs.

4. Stay hydrated!

1-28 Fruit Water

One of the best things you can do for your overall health and wellness is to drink a lot of water.  Add some fruit slices for a more flavorful way of staying hydrated.   Staying hydrating will do wonders for your skin as well as your immune system so it’s a win-win!

5. Make sure you’re getting enough Vitamin C.

1-28 OJ

Vitamin C is great for protecting you from the common cold and the flu so make sure to get your recommended daily amount (75-90 mg).  Orange juice is a great source of Vitamin C.

6. Wash your hands regularly.

1-28 Washing Hands

During cold and flu season, one of the easiest ways to catch something is second-hand contact.  Whether it’s walking into class, into a bathroom stall, or walking through the hall of your dorm room, you’re touching a lot of doorknobs and common areas.  Washing your hands regularly will help eliminate some of those germs.

8 Budget-Friendly Beauty Products

If you’re on a budget, and let’s face it most college students are, that does not mean you should have to forego quality when it comes to beauty products. Here’s a list of some of the best budget-friendly beauty products I have come across over the last year! Enjoy!

1. Rimmel Lasting Finish Kate Moss Lipstick

beauty product-1The Kate Moss lipsticks from Rimmel are long lasting and highly pigmented.  The shade 01 is a great red for pretty much any skin tone.  These lipsticks go on easily and look beautiful.  They retail for $4.99 at Target.

2. Maybelline Eye Studio Color Tattoo 24HR Cream Gel Eyeshadow

beauty product-2

These are the best cream eyeshadows I’ve found not just in the drugstore, but in general.  They last all day, don’t crease, and come in some great shades.  My favorite shades are Bad to the Bronze and Inked in Pink. They make a great base, but are also great on their own.  They retail for $6.99 at Ulta.

3. Rimmel Stay Matte Powder

beauty product-3

Rimmel has the best translucent powder out there!  This powder lasts all day and controls shine and sets your makeup really well.  They come in other shades as well, but the transparent one is my favorite for everyday use.  They retail for $4.99 at Ulta.

4. NYX Eyebrow Cake Powder Kit

The NYX eyebrow kits come in a decent range of shades and each kit comes with two matte eyebrow powders and a clear brow gel to set your brows in place.  They are  super easy to apply and give a very natural look.  They retail for $5.99 at Target.

5. Maybelline The Falsies Mascara

beauty product-7

This is a great buy since you get two products in one.  You get a great blush and a great bronzer.  The bronzer is great for contouring as well as all-over use to add a nice tan, glow.  The e.l.f. duo also makes a pretty good dupe for the Nars Blush & Bronzer duo!  The e.l.f. duo retails for $3.00 at Target, while the Nars duo retails for $42.00 at Sephora.

8. Olay Fresh Effects Dew Over Hydrating Gel Moisturizer

This Olay moisturizer is great for everyday use.  Moisturizing the skin is very important for your skin’s health and is a far-too-often forgotten part of the skin-care routine for many of us.  Don’t leave out this terribly important step!  One tub lasts for several months, so it is worth every penny.  It retails for $12.99 at Target.
